Graduate Service Engineer

Role Description

Ionoptika is looking for a new trainee service engineer to join our team. If you are a recent graduate, post-graduate or PhD in a scientific or engineering subject, with hands-on experience and interest in working with scientific instrumentation,  this could be the perfect role for you.  Enthusiasm and an aptitude for instrumentation is more important to us than time served, so this is an excellent opportunity to move into the exciting world of an international service engineer.

This is a full time role for a Service Engineer- Scientific Instrumentation at Ionoptika Ltd working at our factory in Chandler’s Ford and up to 50% at customer sites both in the UK and overseas. Typical work activities will usually include some or all of the following:

  • Site visits in the UK or worldwide
  • Duration of visits are typically up to 7 days but may be several weeks on occasion
  • Seconded to Test Department during training phase and when not at a customer site for familiarisation in testing and optimising ion beam systems
  • Liase with customers, providing advice and fault resolution
  • Liase with Test/ Engineering for 2nd line support
  • Liase with sales to feed back customer requirements, concerns, and future sales opportunities
  • Creating documentation in relation to service activities
  • Develop and present customer training
  • Continually updating technical knowledge and skills by attending in-house and/or external courses, reading manuals and accessing new applications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree, Masters Degree or PhD, in a technical subject preferably Physics, Chemistry or  Electronics,  alternatively a technical apprenticeship in an Engineering company
  • Hands-on experience using scientific equipment in either a University or Research lab (may be as part of a degree course), or in a scientific instrument company.
  • Ideally having experience of vacuum systems and Scientific instrumentation
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Motivated self-starter, able to work alone, and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Passport, ability and willingness to travel worldwide as required, potentially at short notice
  • Time-management skills and the ability to establish reasonable and attainable deadlines for resolution
  • Ability to prioritize and manage several milestones and projects efficiently
  • Valid drivers licence and good driving record
